Networking
This
entire section applies ONLY if you are running The Ultimate on multiple
workstations within a store. It is enclosed in the documentation
folder of your installed The Ultimate system.
The
Ultimate software will operate on from 1 - 30 workstations. Almost
ANY networking system will work. This includes ALL versions of
Microsoft Windows using the enclosed Windows networking system.
A
peer to peer network is recommended. This means, if you desire to
have 3 workstations, then only 3 computers are necessary, not an extra
one to act strictly as the "server". Simply pick one of
the computers to be your server, and the rest will be workstations.
There
are two ways to install The Ultimate on your existing network:
1.
Only install The Ultimate on the server, and run the workstations by
pointing to the server's hard drive.
2.
Install The Ultimate on ALL computers, while instructing each
workstation to look to the server for only the data. (Recommended)
SOME
NETWORKING TIPS:
-
Make
sure you share the server's hard drive for FULL access.
We recommend that the complete hard drive be shared, not just the ULTIMATE
folder.
-
Map
the server's hard drive on each workstation. Assign a free
drive letter to the mapped drive. For instructions on mapping
a drive, press <F1> on your desktop and do an Index
search for "mapping drive letters" When the drive is
mapped successfully, you will see the drive appear on the My
Computer screen.
-
If
you enter The Ultimate and the Demonstration Store (999) appears
instead of your store, then it means that your workstation has
temporarily lost it's mapping of the server's hard drive. This
can be a common occurrence if the workstation is powered up before
the server. You will need to map the server's hard drive once
again.
Refer
to the Network Installation page for
details on setting up your network specifically for The Ultimate and
creating shortcuts on each computer.
