Network Installation

This entire section applies ONLY if you are running The Ultimate on multiple workstations within a store.  It is also enclosed in the DOCUMENT folder of your installed The Ultimate system.

   Overview

The Network Installation Feature of The Ultimate allows the program files to be installed on the local hard drive of each workstation. Therefore, each and every individual computer will be running it’s own copy of the executable code, thus only sharing DATA files between computers. The result will be a faster, more robust operation of the software. The effect will be immediately noticeable. Exactly how much so will depend on the speed of your hardware and your networking environment.

Installation from the CD Drive on a Secondary Workstation

1.  Insert the Master CD into the CD drive.

2.  Do the following to complete the installation:

From the Desktop, open My Computer.
Open the CD Drive
Click on the ULTDEMO.EXE file.
Click on the UNZIP button.
Click on the CLOSE button to exit.
Start The Ultimate

Unless you have changed the destination folder, (which you should not!) The Ultimate is now installed in a folder named ULTIMATE right off the root.

   Configuring the Workstation

Those customers who are familiar with the Network setup of their system should find this installation quite simple. For those customers not familiar with their Network setup, we suggest that you consult your Network Supervisor or installer.

Premiere regrets that our software support department cannot assist in the installation of a window's network or in drive mapping other than by clarifying particular points which may be unclear in this documentation.

You will know that you have completed the installation properly if The Ultimate comes up in the DEMONSTRATION store mode (store 999). Pressing F9 from the main menu will confirm that you are in store 999.

NOTE:  The following is NOT to be run on Terminal 01 (server).

Select the "Ultimate Modules" menu selection on the main menu system.  Press <enter> on the "Set Network Data Path" button.

The following three questions on the screen need to be answered.

Terminal number
Enter the Terminal number of this workstation. Valid responses are 02 – 30.  The main computer will automatically be 01.

Data Drive Letter
Enter the letter of the Hard Drive where your data is located. It is the letter of the already mapped hard drive of the main computer (server).

Data Path
There are only two possible answers for this question. Either ULTIMATE or leave it blank.

If you have mapped the ENTIRE hard drive of the main computer (which is recommended), the answer will be ULTIMATE.

Only leave this blank if the network drive letter was mapped directly into the ULTIMATE folder of the main computer. Using drive letter F as an example, when exiting the software in the past, if the cursor resided at an F: prompt instead of F:\ULTIMATE, then the network drive was mapped so that drive F was actually the ULTIMATE folder of the main computer.

If you make a mistake by typing ULTIMATE when it should be blank, then it will alert you to this error immediately. However, should you make a mistake the other way around and leave it blank when it should be ULTIMATE, you will not find out about this mistake until you reenter the Main Menu and the system remains on the Demonstration store (store 999).

If the Data Drive Letter was entered incorrectly, then upon exiting <F1>, you will receive a "Data Not Found in Selected Location" message and force you to correct the information.  If you are unable to locate the proper path, press <F4> to clear the responses and exit.  Check and make sure that the server's hard drive was properly mapped.  Look for the mapped drive to appear in the My Computer icon on the desktop.

When the three questions have been properly answered, press <F1> to return to the Main Menu.  If  the installation was successfully completed, the terminal number will be correct and the store information, serial number and store number will be that of the main computer.

When creating a shortcut on the desktop, the Command line should be set to C:\ULTIMATE\ULTIMATE.EXE  and a working folder of  C:\ULTIMATE.

If there ever becomes a need to disconnect the workstation from the network and just run the demo from the local hard drive, press F4 from inside the "Set Network Data Path" setup screen to clear the setup information. This may be desired for training purposes so that one workstation can be running the demonstration system without interfering with the others running the real data. The workstation can be reconnected at any time with the server by rerunning the utility.

For support purposes we highly recommend that The Ultimate NOT be automatically started upon boot up.  Therefore the shortcut should be on the desktop and not the "StartUp" program folder which is located on the program menu of the Start button.

Click HERE for detailed instructions on setting up the "Set Network Data Path" utility.

   Other Notes

Important!  Again, Do NOT run this utility on the main computer (server).

You may also decide not to load the actual program on each machine, and simply map the main computer's hard drive to the workstations.  This way, when you create a shortcut on your desktop, point it directly to the mapped drive.

Example: If the mapped drive is the entire F drive, then set the Command line on the shortcut to:

 F:\ULTIMATE\ULTIMATE.EXE  /TERM=02

Make sure you type the terminal number (each workstation needs to be different)  The syntax after ULTIMATE.EXE is SPACE followed by a FORWARD SLASH followed by TERM=??  (??=Terminal Number - 02 not 2).

   Networking from DOS

The basic rule of thumb is that The Ultimate can run on any type or brand of networking which was used to run the old software.

Each workstation must have at least 540,000 bytes in the "Largest executable program size" question which can be read by typing MEM <enter> at any DOS prompt.  If the answer is less than 540,000 then the DOS utility MEMMAKER will need to be run.  MEMMAKER comes free with DOS and should be in the DOS directory.  If it is not, then there was never a full copy of DOS and it's utilities loaded on your computer.  You will need to contact a computer specialist to assist you.

SHARE.EXE must also be loaded prior to entering The Ultimate.  This should also be in the DOS directory.  You can copy it to the root directory for easy loading upon startup.

AUTOEXEC.BAT file

The last few lines of a typical AUTOEXEC.BAT file would look like this:

SHARE  /L:500  /F:4096
CD\ULTIMATE
ULTIMATE

NOTE: On workstations where the program diskettes have not been installed, then the last few lines should be:

SHARE  /L:500  /F:4096
F:
(or mapped drive letter)
CD\ULTIMATE
ULTIMATE  /TERM=02
  (or workstation number)

CONFIG.SYS file

Within the CONFIG.SYS file there should be:

BUFFERS = 40
FILES = 200

Premiere cannot guarantee assistance in the editing of any boot up system file. You will need to contact a computer specialist to assist you if any problems arise, that cannot be handled, even as part of your "The Ultimate Club" privileges.  From experience, we find that it is extremely hard (and dangerous) to do any type of system file editing over the telephone.
